Philodendron hederaceum (also called Heartleaf Philodendron or Philodendron scandens) is often found in lists of the easiest plants to grow. A vigorously climbing vine, this philodendron lives up to its name(hederaceum meaning "like ivy"). It has dark green cordate (heart-shaped) leaves and at each node of its stem are small spikes that allow it to cling to surfaces. We most often use it as a hanging basket, but if given the opportunity to climb, Philodendron hederaceum will produce larger and larger leaves. In the wild, its leaves can grow up to 20" (50 cm) long. This plant can have very long stems (up to 13 feet - 4m.), so don't hesitate to prune them to keep the plant in a bushy habit. A plant of resilience par excellence, this philodendron is excellent for beginners in gardening.
