Philodendron 'El Choco Red' is an exotic and highly prized variety of philodendron, known for its large, impressive leaves that display a deep reddish hue when young, becoming darker green when mature with reddish reflections under the right light. This plant takes its name from the Chocó region of Colombia, where it originates, which gives it a special cachet among collectors of exotic plants.

Origin: Philodendron 'El Choco Red' comes from the humid tropical region of Chocó in Colombia. This region is renowned for its biodiversity, and this plant is adapted to an understory environment, typical of dense tropical forests.

Growth: This variety of philodendron is a climbing plant that, under optimal conditions, can develop leaves up to 60 cm long. It grows relatively quickly under the right care, and it benefits from support such as a mossy stake or pole to grow on.

Flowers: Like many philodendrons, 'El Choco Red' can produce flowers, but they are rarely seen indoors. The flowers are typically spathes, similar to those of other araceae, but are generally considered less spectacular than the foliage.

Light: This philodendron prefers medium to bright indirect light. However, good light is necessary to maintain the rich red coloration of the young leaves.

Watering: Watering should be regular, allowing the substrate to dry out a bit between waterings. A good practice is to check the substrate with your finger; Water when the first few inches are dry to the touch.

Substrate: Use a well-draining tropical plant mix, including coco coir, bark of various sizes, pumice, perlite, and charcoal. This substrate will help maintain the ideal balance between moisture retention and drainage, which is essential for root health.

Toxicity: Like other members of the Araceae family, Philodendron 'El Choco Red' contains calcium oxalate crystals which can be irritating and toxic if ingested.
