Hoya rotundiflora

Hoya rotundiflora is a fascinating species of Hoya, appreciated for its unique foliage and delicate flowers. This climbing or drooping plant belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is native to tropical Asia, where it thrives in humid forest environments.

Origin: Hoya rotundiflora is notably found in Southeast Asia, including countries such as Thailand and Malaysia. It thrives in forest habitats, clinging to trees and rocks in naturally damp conditions.

Growth: The most striking feature of Hoya rotundiflora is its round, almost perfectly circular leaves, hence the name "rotundiflora", which means "round flowers" in Latin. The leaves are generally dark green in color, with hints of red or purple under strong light. This plant develops climbing or drooping stems that can spread and require support for best cultivation practices.

Flowers: Hoya rotundiflora flowers are small, star-shaped and grouped in spherical umbels. They are typically white or cream with a pink or red center, giving off a sweet fragrance. Flowering can occur at various times of the year, especially if the plant is maintained in optimal conditions.

Light: This Hoya prefers bright indirect light. Although it can tolerate lower light levels, insufficient light can reduce flowering.

Watering: Watering should be moderate, allowing the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings. As with many Hoyas, too much water can lead to root rot.

Substrate: A well-draining mix is crucial. A substrate for orchids or a specific mix for Hoyas, including perlite, bark and charcoal, is ideal for providing the necessary drainage.

Toxicity: Like many other plants in the Apocynaceae family, Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets, but it is always advisable to keep them out of reach, especially to avoid accidental ingestion by curious animals or children.
