Hoya is known by many names: Wax Flower, Porcelain Flowers, Wax Plant. It is a popular houseplant grown for its glossy foliage and sweetly scented wax-like flowers. It is captivating, not only because of its fragrance and waxy appearance, but also because its flowers look like stars gathered in clusters that are also star-shaped.

It is interesting to know that Hoya carnosa has been cultivated for more than 200 years and has given birth to many cultivars. The form Hoya carnosa 'Compacta' is sometimes sold under the name Hoya 'Krinkle Kurl' or Hindu Rope. It is a really peculiar, even strange cultivar, with leaves all twisted as if they were curly, thick, waxy, dark green. Unlike the other Hoyas that are good climbers, this variety is rather droopy, making it an excellent candidate for hanging baskets. Hoya carnosa 'Compacta Albomarginata' has the same curled leaves as the usual twisted hoya, but with an irregular white and pink margin. Occasionally some entire stems are entirely pure pink or white. It has a slow growth.
