Sedum morganianum, commonly known as donkey's tail or horse's tail, is a very popular succulent due to its long, hanging stems covered with small, fleshy, green leaves, often tinged pink or blue. Native to southern Mexico and Honduras, this plant is ideal for hanging cultivation, where its stems can fall gracefully, creating a spectacular visual effect.

Origin: Sedum morganianum grows wild in rocky crevices and on steep slopes, where it can take advantage of natural drainage and sun exposure. This explains its drought tolerance and need for good drainage.

Growth: Sedum morganianum stems can grow up to 60 cm long, or even longer, in optimal conditions. Leaves are densely arranged along the stems, giving the plant its lush, bushy appearance.

Flowers: In summer, it can produce small pink or red flowers, grouped in inflorescences at the end of the stems. Although flowering is infrequent in indoor cultivation, it adds extra appeal to the plant when it does occur.

Light: Prefer bright but indirect light. Direct sunlight can be tolerated, especially if the plant is acclimatized gradually, but protection from the scorching midday sun is recommended to avoid leaf burn.

Watering: As with many succulents, watering should be moderate. Let the substrate dry out completely between waterings, and reduce watering in winter to simulate natural dry conditions.

Substrate: A well-draining mix is essential. Use a substrate for cacti and succulents, enriched with coarse sand, perlite or pumice, to ensure good drainage and prevent root rot.

Toxicity: Sedum morganianum is generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets, making it a safe option for homes with children or pets.
