Ferocactus horridus var. brevispinus is a variety of Ferocactus horridus distinguished by its shorter spines than the type species. As its name suggests, "brevispinus" means "short-spined" in Latin, making it a particularly attractive specimen for those who prefer cacti with a slightly less threatening appearance, while retaining the robust, sculptural look typical of Ferocactus.

Origin: Ferocactus horridus, including its brevispinus form, is native to the desert regions of Mexico. These cacti are adapted to survive in arid environments, where they can tolerate high temperatures and prolonged periods of drought.

Growth: The brevispinus variety tends to develop a globular or cylindrical shape as it ages, reaching an imposing size. The shorter spines give the plant a dense texture and a less aggressive appearance than the typical species.

Flowers: Like most Ferocactus, the brevispinus variety can produce bright, colorful flowers that usually appear around the top of the plant in summer. The flowers, often yellow or red, add a dramatic contrast to the greenery and spines of the plant.

Light: This plant prefers bright exposure and can tolerate full sun. Direct sunlight is beneficial to encourage healthy growth and stimulate flowering.

Watering: Watering should be moderate during the growing season, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering considerably to simulate the drier natural conditions of its habitat.

Substrate: A well-draining mix is essential to prevent root rot. Using a cactus substrate, which can include perlite and pumice, is recommended to ensure good drainage.

Toxicity: Ferocactus horridus var. brevispinus is not known to be toxic to humans or pets, but its spines, even short ones, can be prickly. Handle with care.
