Astrophytum myriostigma 'Quadricostatum', also sometimes called Astrophytum myriostigma var. quadricostatum, is a particular form of Astrophytum myriostigma, famous for having four distinct ribs instead of the five to eight usually seen in the type species. This variant is highly prized for its unique aesthetics and slow growth, making it a prized specimen among cactus collectors.

Origin: Like the type species, 'Quadricostatum' is native to Mexico, where it grows in desert regions. Astrophytum myriostigma in general is adapted to survive in arid environments, with little water and intense sunshine.

Growth: This variant develops a globular or slightly columnar body with age, characterized by its four vertical ribs. The plant is often covered with white wax flakes, giving it a distinctive starry or marbled appearance.

Flowers: 'Quadricostatum' usually blooms in summer, producing large yellow flowers that open in daylight. The flowers are all the more striking for their contrast with the plant's green body and white markings.

Light: This form of Astrophytum prefers bright, direct sunlight. Adequate light is crucial for its growth and flowering, as well as for maintaining the intensity of its white markings.

Watering: Watering should be moderate during the growing season, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. During the winter dormancy period, reduce watering considerably.

Substrate: A well-draining mix is essential. Using a specific cactus substrate, enriched with perlite and pumice, is ideal for promoting good drainage and preventing root rot.

Toxicity: Astrophytum myriostigma 'Quadricostatum' is not known to be toxic to humans or pets. As it has no sharp spines, it is considered safe to handle compared with other cacti.
