Aphelandra squarrosa, commonly known as zebra plant because of its striking dark green leaves with prominent white or silver veins, is a tropical ornamental plant prized for its decorative foliage and colorful flowers. It belongs to the Acanthaceae family and is native to tropical America, where it thrives in moist, shady environments.

Origin: Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, particularly Brazil, Aphelandra squarrosa has adapted to capture light under the dense forest canopy.
Growth: This plant is relatively fast-growing under the right conditions. It can reach up to 1 metre in height, but is generally kept smaller in indoor cultivation by pruning.
Flowers: Aphelandra squarrosa produces impressive inflorescences, usually bright yellow, which contrast beautifully with its dark foliage. These flowers appear in summer or autumn and can add significant decorative appeal to the plant.
Light: Prefers bright indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn leaves, while insufficient light can result in less vibrant foliage and reduced flowering.
Watering: Requires regular watering to keep the substrate evenly moist, but not soggy. Aphelandra squarrosa is susceptible to root rot, so good drainage is crucial.
Substrate: A well-draining mix is important. Use a potting soil mix enriched with perlite or vermiculite to improve drainage.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures, between 18°C and 25°C, and high humidity. Avoid cold drafts and extreme temperature fluctuations.
