Echinofossulocactus robustus, now more commonly known as Stenocactus robustus following taxonomic revision of the genus, is a distinctive cactus known for its wavy or sharply pleated ribs, which give it a highly decorative appearance. This species attracts attention not only for its unique appearance, but also for its remarkable flowers.

Origin: Stenocactus robustus is native to the desert regions of Mexico, where it grows in stony or clay soils, often in arid or semi-arid environments. These original conditions have shaped its ability to store water and survive with limited rainfall.

Growth: This plant is relatively slow-growing, which is typical of many cacti. Stenocactus robustus generally develops a spherical or slightly elongated solitary stem, adorned with numerous fine, undulating ribs, between which areoles from which spines emerge.

Flowers: Stenocactus robustus flowers usually appear in spring. They are often white, pink or purple, emerging from the top of the plant. Despite their ephemeral beauty, they are much appreciated for the colorful accent they add to the cactus.

Light: Prefers bright exposure with a certain amount of direct sunlight, especially to encourage flowering. However, in very hot regions, protection from the midday sun may be necessary to prevent burning.

Watering: Watering should be moderate during the growing season, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to allow the plant to go into dormancy.

Substrate: Well-draining soil is essential for the health of Stenocactus robustus. A specific cactus mix, incorporating perlite and pumice, will promote drainage and help prevent root rot.

Toxicity: Stenocactus robustus is not known to be toxic to humans or pets, but its spines can be prickly. Handle with care to avoid injury.
