Astrophytum ornatum, commonly known as the ornate cactus or starfish, is the largest and fastest-growing member of the Astrophytum genus. Native to the arid regions of central Mexico, this cactus is distinguished by its imposing silhouette and unique decorative patterns.

Origin: This cactus occurs naturally in the desert regions of Mexico, where it has adapted to survive in conditions of extreme drought. Its native habitat includes rocky or calcareous soils, often in areas with direct exposure to the sun.

Growth: Astrophytum ornatum can reach significant heights, up to 2 meters in the wild, with a green columnar body characterized by pronounced ribs. The plant's surface is often adorned with white patches of wax flakes, which act as a natural sunscreen.

Flowers: During the summer months, Astrophytum ornatum can produce large yellow flowers at the top of the plant. These flowers, which can measure up to 8 cm in diameter, open during the day and can last for several days.

Light: This species requires full light exposure to thrive, preferring full sun. Adequate light is crucial to encourage growth and flowering.

Watering: Watering should be moderate during the growing season, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. During winter, reduce watering to allow the plant to go into dormancy.

Substrate: A well-draining mix is essential. Use a cactus substrate that can be enhanced with perlite and pumice, to promote good drainage and overall plant health.

Toxicity: Astrophytum ornatum is not known to be toxic to humans or pets, but it's always a good idea to handle the plant with care to avoid potential injury from its spines.
