Hibiscus rosa-sinensis f. variegata, also known as Tropical Hibiscus or Chinese Hibiscus, is a variety of Hibiscus prized for its variegated foliage and spectacular flowers.
Origin: Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is native to East Asia, particularly China and India. The variegata form is a variety cultivated for its attractive green and white foliage.
Watering: This plant prefers regular and abundant watering during the growing season, but the soil must be well drained to avoid root rot. Allow the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. During the winter, watering can be reduced.
Light : Hibiscus rosa-sinensis f. variegata prefers bright light and can tolerate direct sunlight. However, too much light can cause discoloration of the foliage.
Substrate: This plant prefers a rich, well-draining soil. A houseplant mix with compost or well decomposed manure may be ideal.
Flower color: The flowers of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis f. variegata are usually bright red with a darker center. They are large and trumpet-shaped, typical of Hibiscus, and can reach up to 15 cm in diameter.
Minimum temperature: Hibiscus rosa-sinensis f. variegata is a tropical plant that prefers warm temperatures. It can tolerate a minimum temperature of about 10°C, but it does best at temperatures of 20°C or more.
Growth Rate: With ideal growing conditions, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis f. variegata can grow quite rapidly, reaching a height of 1.5 to 2.5 meters. To encourage healthy growth, it may be helpful to fertilize regularly during the growing season with a potassium-rich fertilizer.
