Black lava, also known as basalt, is a volcanic rock derived from the solidification of basaltic magma. Characterized by its dark, almost black color, it is widespread across the Earth's surface, often forming volcanic landscapes and geologically active regions.

Black lava has a dense, solid texture, the result of slower cooling than that which gives rise to red lava. It may have a uniform structure or present distinct mineral formations, depending on the minerals of which it is composed. In horticulture, black lava has several important uses:

  1. Soil drainage and aeration: Thanks to its density and porous structure, black lava can be mixed with soil to improve drainage and aeration. It promotes the movement of water and air in the soil, creating a favorable environment for plant roots.

  2. Water and nutrient retention: Although black lava is draining, it can also retain small quantities of water and nutrients in its pores, such as iron, magnesium and calcium. This can help provide a reserve of moisture and nutrients accessible to plants, particularly during dry periods.

  3. Ground temperature control: Because black lava can absorb and retain heat, it can help regulate ground temperature. This can be particularly useful in climates with wide temperature variations.

  4. Potting systems: Black lava is often included in substrate mixes for potted plants. It adds solid structure to the mix while improving drainage.
