Olea europaea 'Arbequina' (Olive tree)

24.99 $

Olea europaea 'Arbequina', commonly known as the Arbequina olive, is a variety of olive tree native to Spain, particularly appreciated for its small, sweetly fruity olives. Not only is this tree grown for its tasty fruit, it is also popular as an indoor or patio plant for its silvery foliage, graceful habit and symbolism of peace and longevity.

Origin: Olea europaea is native to the Mediterranean basin, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years. The 'Arbequina' variety comes from Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, and is widely cultivated in this region for the production of high-quality olive oil.

Growth: 'Arbequina' is a slow to moderate-growing tree, reaching heights of 3 to 4 meters when grown in the ground, although it generally remains smaller when grown in pots. Its compact size and tolerance of regular pruning make it particularly suitable for pot cultivation. Foliage is evergreen, with elongated leaves that are green above and silvery below, giving the tree an elegant appearance all year round.

Flowers: In spring, the 'Arbequina' olive produces small white or cream flowers in clusters. Although the flowers are not particularly showy, they are followed by small olives that ripen in autumn, turning from green to black. Arbequina' olives are small, but highly prized for their mild flavor and low bitterness, making them an excellent choice for olive oil production or direct consumption.

Light: The 'Arbequina' olive tree needs bright, direct light to thrive. Place it where it can receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day, either indoors near a south-facing window or outdoors on a terrace or balcony. A lack of light can slow growth and reduce fruit production.

Watering: Although olive trees are drought-tolerant once established, they prefer regular watering, especially during their active growth period in spring and summer. In pots, make sure the substrate drains well and water when the soil surface is dry. In winter, reduce watering, but don't let the soil dry out completely.

Substrate: Use a well-draining substrate, such as a tropical potting mix, to improve drainage. Olive trees prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to avoid water accumulation, which could cause root rot.

Toxicity: 'Arbequina' olive is non-toxic to humans and animals, making it a safe plant to grow indoors or outdoors.
