Muehlenbeckia complexa variegata

11.99 $

Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Variegata', also known as variegated New Zealand creeper, is a charming and attractive houseplant, appreciated for its delicate foliage and slender, intertwined stems. This variegated variety is distinguished by its small, round or oval, green leaves with creamy-white margins, giving it a light, decorative appearance.

Origin: Muehlenbeckia complexa is native to New Zealand, where it grows naturally in coastal areas and open forests. It is known for its ability to form dense, intertwined mats, often used to stabilize sand dunes and eroded soils.

Growth: Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Variegata' is a fast-growing, vigorous plant. It can be grown indoors as a hanging basket plant, or outdoors as a ground cover or climber. Its slender, flexible stems bear small, round, variegated green and creamy-white leaves, adding further visual interest. Indoors, it can reach lengths of 60 cm or more, depending on the size of the container and the space available.

Flowers: Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Variegata' blooms inconspicuously. The flowers, when they appear, are small, creamy or greenish in color, and generally insignificant compared with the foliage. This plant is mainly grown for its decorative foliage rather than its flowers.

Light: This plant prefers bright but indirect light. It can tolerate moderate light conditions, but bright light will encourage denser growth and better leaf variegation. Outdoors, it thrives in partial shade or full sun, provided it is protected from intense direct sunlight.

Watering: Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Variegata' likes evenly moist, but well-drained soil. Water regularly to keep the substrate moist, but avoid letting the water stagnate, which can lead to root rot. In winter, reduce watering, especially if the plant is grown indoors in a cooler environment.

Substrate: Use a light, well-draining potting soil, such as a standard houseplant mix. This plant is not particularly demanding in terms of soil, but prefers a substrate that retains some moisture while allowing good drainage. A mixture enriched with perlite can help improve drainage.

Toxicity: Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Variegata' is not considered toxic to humans or pets, making it a safe choice for homes with children or pets.
