Basil seeds generally germinate in 7 to 14 days at temperatures of 21-29°C. For outdoor planting, sow directly after the last frost date when the soil reaches at least 10°C, preferably around 21°C. Choose a sunny spot with warm, well-drained soil. For indoor sowing, start 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting by sowing the seeds 0.6 cm deep, covering them lightly with soil and keeping the soil slightly moist, but not soggy. Night-time temperatures should not fall below 10°C.

For transplanting, wait until after the last frost and when the basil plants are about 3 to 4 inches tall with their first pair of true leaves. Plant them 12 to 18 inches apart.

As far as watering is concerned, maintain constant but not excessive humidity to avoid root rot.

As far as nutrition is concerned, moderately fertile, well-drained soil is required. Use a balanced water-soluble fertilizer every 2-3 weeks, but avoid over-fertilization.

When pruning, pinch off the upper leaves regularly to encourage bushy growth and avoid flowering, which can alter the flavor of the leaves.

Finally, protect plants with mulch to conserve soil moisture and prevent weeds. Keep an eye on pests such as aphids and mites, using natural or organic control methods. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent diseases such as powdery mildew.

Start picking basil leaves as soon as the plants reach 6 to 8 inches in height. Cut the stems just above a leaf node to encourage new growth. For optimum flavor, harvest basil in the morning when the oils are most concentrated. Regular harvesting promotes continuous growth and prevents the plant from going to seed too quickly.
