Euphorbia anoplia, commonly known as thornless spurge or zebra spurge, is an attractive succulent plant native to South Africa. This species is distinguished by its dark green, fleshy, ridged stems, which mimic the appearance of a thornless cactus column, with white or pale horizontal stripes giving it a zebra-like appearance. Euphorbia anoplia is particularly appreciated for its unique appearance and ease of cultivation, making it a popular choice among succulent plant collectors.

Origin: Euphorbia anoplia is native to the semi-arid regions of South Africa, where it thrives in dry, rocky environments. It is adapted to survive in drought conditions, storing water in its succulent stems to endure periods without rain.

Growth: The plant forms compact clumps, with stems reaching up to 15 cm in height. The stems are characterized by distinct rows of scar-like markings from which the leaves have fallen, creating an attractive zebra pattern.

Flowers: Euphorbia anoplia produces small yellow flowers, called cyathes, which appear at the top of the stems in spring. Although the flowers are quite discreet compared to the dramatic appearance of the stems, they add extra interest to the plant when they are in bloom.

Light: Prefers bright light with some direct sunlight. Adequate sun exposure is essential to maintain distinctive zebra markings and encourage compact growth.

Watering: As with most succulent euphorbias, watering should be moderate. It's important to let the substrate dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter to prevent root rot.

Substrate: Well-draining soil is crucial to the health of Euphorbia anoplia. Using a cactus and succulent mix, enriched with perlite and pumice, is ideal to ensure good drainage.

Toxicity: Euphorbia anoplia contains a milky sap that can be irritating to skin and eyes. We recommend handling the plant with care and avoiding contact with the sap, especially when pruning or repotting.
