Cotyledon pendens, often called witch's claw plant, is an attractive and unique succulent, famous for its long, drooping stems and fleshy, claw-like leaves. It is particularly prized for its ability to grow in cascades, making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets or rock gardens where it can spread naturally.

Origin: Native to the arid regions of South Africa, Cotyledon pendens is adapted to survive in dry, rocky environments, making it particularly resistant to drought and other harsh conditions.

Growth: This succulent has hanging stems up to 50 cm long, with leaves arranged in pairs along the stems. Leaves are grayish-green and can become reddish or orange under strong sunlight or during periods of water stress.

Flowers: Cotyledon pendens produces bell-shaped flowers, usually orange or reddish in color, which appear at the end of the stems during the summer months. The flowers are quite spectacular and add extra decorative appeal when in bloom.

Light: This plant prefers direct to partial sunlight. Adequate exposure to the sun is necessary to promote good growth and optimal flowering. However, in extremely hot climates, protection from the afternoon sun may be beneficial to avoid leaf burn.

Watering: As with most succulents, watering should be limited. Allow the substrate to dry out completely between waterings, and reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant. Cotyledon pendens is very drought tolerant once established.

Substrate: A well-draining mix is essential to prevent root rot. Use a specific substrate for cacti and succulents, which can include potting soil, perlite, and pumice to ensure adequate drainage.

Toxicity: Cotyledon pendens is toxic if ingested, due to the presence of saponins that can cause nausea, vomiting and other gastrointestinal symptoms. It is important to keep this plant out of the reach of children and pets.
