Adenium obesum 'Baobab', also known as Desert Rose 'Baobab', is a particularly impressive variety of Adenium obesum, renowned for its thick, swollen trunk reminiscent of African baobabs. This succulent plant is highly prized for its distinctive silhouette and beautiful flowers, making it a popular choice for succulent collectors and bonsai enthusiasts alike.

Origin: Adenium obesum is native to the semi-arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, where conditions are extremely hot and dry.

Growth: 'Baobab' develops a particularly large, robust caudex (trunk) which serves as a water reserve, enabling it to survive in arid environments. The plant can reach a moderate height, but is relatively slow-growing, making it ideal for pot cultivation.

Flowers: Adenium obesum 'Baobab' flowers are spectacular, often bright pink with a white or yellow center, although colors can vary. They appear in late spring or early summer and can last for several weeks.

Light: This variety needs plenty of direct sunlight to thrive and flower abundantly. It is ideal for a south-facing position, where it can receive at least six hours of direct sunlight a day.

Watering: As a succulent, Adenium obesum 'Baobab' requires little water. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Watering should be reduced considerably during winter, when the plant is dormant.

Substrate: A well-draining soil mix is crucial. Use a cactus substrate or create your own mix by combining universal potting soil with perlite or pumice.

Toxicity: Latex and all plant parts are toxic if ingested, and can cause skin irritation. It is therefore advisable to handle Adenium obesum 'Baobab' with care, especially around children and pets.
