Neoporteria echinus var. floccosa is a variant of Neoporteria echinus, a globular cactus native to the desert regions of Chile. This cactus is distinguished by its compact size, impressive spines and, in the case of the floccosa variety, by a down or fleece ("floccosa" meaning "downy" in Latin) that can cover the plant, offering protection from the intense sun and extreme temperatures of its natural habitat.

Origin: Neoporteria echinus, including its floccosa variety, is endemic to Chile, where it adapts to life in arid and semi-desert environments.

Growth: Neoporteria echinus var. floccosa grows slowly, forming solitary balls over time or groups through division. Its compact size and globular shape make it an excellent choice for collections of potted cacti.

Flowers: This variety is capable of producing colorful flowers, often in shades of yellow to red, which emerge near the top of the plant during the spring or summer flowering season. The flowers add further visual interest and contrast nicely with the body of the cactus.

Light: Prefers full sun to part shade. Sufficient light is necessary to promote healthy growth, flowering and maintenance of the characteristic down.

Watering: Requires moderate watering during the growing season, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, watering should be reduced to simulate drier natural conditions.

Substrate: A well-draining mix is crucial. A cactus substrate, which can include perlite and pumice, is ideal for ensuring good drainage and preventing root rot.

Toxicity: Although cacti are not generally toxic, the spines of Neoporteria echinus var. floccosa can be prickly and dangerous. Handle with care to avoid injury.
