Euphorbia stellata is a fascinating species of succulent plant belonging to the large Euphorbiaceae family. Native to South Africa, this species is notable for its unique growth structure and distinctive decorative features. Euphorbia stellata features a woody, bulbous caudex, from which emerge multiple slender, green branches, giving the plant a starry appearance when viewed from above.

Origin: Euphorbia stellata is endemic to the arid regions of South Africa. It is adapted to survive in conditions of extreme drought, thanks to its caudex, which acts as a water reserve, enabling the plant to withstand long periods without rainfall.

Growth: The plant develops a prominent caudex that can become quite impressive with age, both in size and appearance. Branches extend from the top of the caudex, bearing small green leaves that may fall off during dormancy to minimize water loss.

Flowers: Euphorbia stellata produces small, inconspicuous flowers, usually yellow, which may appear in late winter or early spring. Although flowers are not the main attraction of this species, they do add interest when present.

Light: This euphorbia prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate a certain amount of direct sunlight, but excessive exposure can burn the leaves and caudex.

Watering: Watering should be moderate during the growing season, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. During the dormant period, reduce watering to avoid caudex rot.

Substrate: Well-draining soil is crucial. Using a cactus and succulent mix, enriched with perlite and pumice, is ideal to ensure good drainage and promote plant health.

Toxicity: As with many Euphorbias, Euphorbia stellata contains a milky sap that can be irritating to the skin and eyes, and toxic if ingested. Handle the plant with care and avoid contact with the sap.
