Echinocactus grusonii var. brevispinus, often called mother-in-law's cushion like the type species, is a particular variety of the famous Echinocactus grusonii, distinguished by its shorter spines. Native to the arid regions of Mexico, this variety retains many of the appreciated characteristics of the main species, notably its globular shape and bright green color, while offering a slightly different aesthetic due to the reduced length of its spines.

Origin: Like the type species, Echinocactus grusonii var. brevispinus is native to Mexico, where it thrives in desert environments. It adapts well to dry, hot conditions, storing water in its fleshy body to survive long periods of drought.

Growth: This variant develops a globular or spherical structure, reaching considerable dimensions with age. It grows relatively slowly, a common feature among cacti, making it a long-lasting plant.

Flowers: Echinocactus grusonii var. brevispinus produces yellow flowers that appear near the top of the plant in summer, provided the plant is mature and in optimal growing conditions. The flowers add significant decorative appeal and are often a highlight for collectors.

Light: As with most cacti, this variety prefers bright light and can tolerate full sun. Adequate sun exposure is necessary to promote healthy growth and flowering.

Watering: Watering should be moderate during the growing season, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. During winter, reduce watering to allow the plant to go into dormancy.

Substrate: A well-draining mix is essential for plant health. A cactus substrate, which can include perlite and pumice, is ideal to ensure good drainage.

Toxicity: Echinocactus grusonii var. brevispinus is not known to be toxic to humans or pets, but care should be taken when handling the plant due to its thorns, although shorter.
