Calathea lancifolia (or Goeppertia insignis) is also called Rattlesnake Plant because of its snake scale pattern. It is also sometimes called Peacock Plant. The leaves are long and narrow, lance-shaped, and have somewhat wavy blades. The top of the leaves is light green and they are punctuated with alternating dark green markings. The underside of the leaves is purple. The beautiful foliage of Calathea lancifolia really makes it an attraction in any plant collection. At dusk, the leaves close towards the center, like a prayer plant.

Calatheas come from tropical rainforests and have a very high need for moisture in the air. They also like to have a moist substrate at all times. Leaves that dry out and turn brown tell you that the environment is too dry for your plant. Calatheas are sensitive to excess salts in fertilizers and to chlorine. These are plants that are not recommended for beginners.
